WOW! She doesn't want to harm her other daughters so why Amaia? This was such a good read!  Anything that mentions the FBI, Quantico, and serial killer has my utmost attention。  It was interesting to read about the behind the scenes action of an FBI investigation。  Throwing in a real life natural disaster gave a certain chill to the story。  I also like the two different cases, although at first it didn't make sense。  I wonder if there will be another book based on the gang that kidnapped the girls, because I felt that was left wide open。Thank you TLC Book Tours, TLC Diversity, Author Dolores Redondo and Amazon Publishing for my #copy。 This one is available now!Book Rating: 4/5Wine Pairing:  Estancia Cabernet Sauvignon 。。。more

After having watched and liked the TV series about the Baztan valley by this author, I decided to order this book。 I was sorely disappointed by this rendition as the plot wanders from story to story without it being able to bring them together。 There are 5 stories in this book。 One is a flashback to the early life of Amaia Salazar in Elizondo。 One deals with a serial killer and another with voodoo。 The story that had the most interest to me is the description of the effects of Hurricane Katrina After having watched and liked the TV series about the Baztan valley by this author, I decided to order this book。 I was sorely disappointed by this rendition as the plot wanders from story to story without it being able to bring them together。 There are 5 stories in this book。 One is a flashback to the early life of Amaia Salazar in Elizondo。 One deals with a serial killer and another with voodoo。 The story that had the most interest to me is the description of the effects of Hurricane Katrina upon New Orleans。 Finally the there is one story that made no sense。 I will say the character development was very good and some of the stories did offer some interesting parts, but over all the book leaves a lot to be desired。 I plan to read the first installment of the trilogy and see where that leads。 。。。more

A complicated but satisfying readThree interlocking storylines make this a novel that cannot be rushed thru。 Evil has so many faces。 Surely there will be a follow-up novel。

Gripping crime novelThis is one of the more interesting crime novels I have read in some time。 The story has a lot of twists and the characters are well developed。 Setting the story in New Orleans during Katrina added a lot to the book。 Well done。

En general, la novela me gustó, aunque hubo capítulos a veces se me hicieron largos。 Me parece que no tiene tanta tensión como las tres anteriores de la serie。 Sin embargo, fue un placer indiscutible volver a encontrarme con Amaia。

Too long for a let down ending I was really hoping for a better conclusion。 The first half wasn’t bad but then it started drifting。 I found the wrap up hasty and unclear, not to mention I’m still not sure what the deal was with Amaia’s mother and dude out in the woods。 Or what Dupree and Bull actually did。 Thumbs down。

The book started out really strong, at 5 stars, but by the time I was done, it was down to 3。5。 Left me feeling very disappointed, and that I had wasted my time。Everything was good until the lead FBI agent (Dupree) completely goes off his most urgent task, and goes off on another (local) case in New Orleans。Also, exploring the heroine’s past traumas was interesting, but it was unsatisfying and boring jumping back and forth, and ultimately it felt forced and unsatisfying in any explanations given The book started out really strong, at 5 stars, but by the time I was done, it was down to 3。5。 Left me feeling very disappointed, and that I had wasted my time。Everything was good until the lead FBI agent (Dupree) completely goes off his most urgent task, and goes off on another (local) case in New Orleans。Also, exploring the heroine’s past traumas was interesting, but it was unsatisfying and boring jumping back and forth, and ultimately it felt forced and unsatisfying in any explanations given。Her having a one night stand with the New Orleans detective seemed unnecessary and gratuitous。The settings were fascinating, and I loved all the local culture with Creole and Haitian character, and enjoyed the parts in Spain, but the mother and the woman with the wolf teeth were over the top。 。。。more

Kindle Unlimited Adiobook。 To be honest, the only thing making this 2。5 instead of 2 was the Katrina setting。 I kept forgetting about the serial killer they were hunting。 The book seemed to go on and on forever。 It also bordered on horror rather than thriller to me。 I finally DNF’d with about 2 hours to go, found I had no interest in finding out who the serial killer was or in what happened to these people。 Just not for me and I won’t go on with the series。 This was translated to English from Sp Kindle Unlimited Adiobook。 To be honest, the only thing making this 2。5 instead of 2 was the Katrina setting。 I kept forgetting about the serial killer they were hunting。 The book seemed to go on and on forever。 It also bordered on horror rather than thriller to me。 I finally DNF’d with about 2 hours to go, found I had no interest in finding out who the serial killer was or in what happened to these people。 Just not for me and I won’t go on with the series。 This was translated to English from Spanish 。。。more

This is an interesting book that provides insights into a variety of areas, including: serial killers, vodoo and its Spanish equivalent, and killer storms。 The descriptions of Katrina is so intense that it makes you "see" what it must have been like much more than the TV coverage ever did。 This is an interesting book that provides insights into a variety of areas, including: serial killers, vodoo and its Spanish equivalent, and killer storms。 The descriptions of Katrina is so intense that it makes you "see" what it must have been like much more than the TV coverage ever did。 。。。more

An excellent readI'd read the books that preceded this one and though enjoyable, they focused a little too much on myths and legends for my liking。 By broadening the scope of this book and setting it in the period before her previous Salazar novels Redondo has produced a gripping and convincing tale that surpasses the promise of her earlier work。 An excellent readI'd read the books that preceded this one and though enjoyable, they focused a little too much on myths and legends for my liking。 By broadening the scope of this book and setting it in the period before her previous Salazar novels Redondo has produced a gripping and convincing tale that surpasses the promise of her earlier work。 。。。more

The North Face of the Heart is the prequel to the Redondo’s popular Baztán trilogy, which I haven’t read, and is translated into English by Michael Meigs (who oddly turns up as a character: “our team leader there is Michael Meigs, a great guy”)。This novel tries to include it all: Hurricane Katrina and FEMA’s response, multiple dysfunctional families, multiple serial killers, unlikely romance, racism, misogyny, magic realism, good cop/bad cop…。。 The novel would have benefitted from paring down to The North Face of the Heart is the prequel to the Redondo’s popular Baztán trilogy, which I haven’t read, and is translated into English by Michael Meigs (who oddly turns up as a character: “our team leader there is Michael Meigs, a great guy”)。This novel tries to include it all: Hurricane Katrina and FEMA’s response, multiple dysfunctional families, multiple serial killers, unlikely romance, racism, misogyny, magic realism, good cop/bad cop…。。 The novel would have benefitted from paring down to tighten up the story line。At 15% in, I made 4 predictions to myself about what would happen by the end and unfortunately I was 4/4。 Readers who enjoy trilogy will probably enjoy this prequel。 I found it predictable and unfocused。Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to review the ARC via Netgalley。 。。。more

Leftist goopWhen I started this book I wondered at the complexity of characters and plot。 As I got to 30% the Bad Guy was revolved as " evangelical killer " which turned me off, so I rated and went on。 Don't attack your base。 Leftist goopWhen I started this book I wondered at the complexity of characters and plot。 As I got to 30% the Bad Guy was revolved as " evangelical killer " which turned me off, so I rated and went on。 Don't attack your base。 。。。more

The North Face of the Heart is a gripping and thrilling read about a talented detective from northern Spain, Amaia Salazar who is helping FBI agent Aloisius Dupree find a vicious serial killer dubbed “the Composer”。 This psychological thriller is like no other I have read。 It’s disturbing, dark and devious, a delight to read for thriller lovers。 The pacing and reveal is so dramatic and adds to the reading experience。 Don’t miss this!

This is a hard one for me to review。 I liked almost everything about it, except。。。 it could have been half its length and nothing would have been lost。 I loved the Baztan trilogy。 The world building is fantastic, the protagonist's backstory is wonderfully, ridiculously, dramatically terrible, and the stories are well plotted。 This one was, too, and I appreciated the way the author incorporated Cajun folk traditions into the narrative。 The secondary characters were likable, the writing was smooth This is a hard one for me to review。 I liked almost everything about it, except。。。 it could have been half its length and nothing would have been lost。 I loved the Baztan trilogy。 The world building is fantastic, the protagonist's backstory is wonderfully, ridiculously, dramatically terrible, and the stories are well plotted。 This one was, too, and I appreciated the way the author incorporated Cajun folk traditions into the narrative。 The secondary characters were likable, the writing was smooth, the plot was interesting enough, just。。。It could have easily been cut in half to no ill effect。I listened to this one, and it was over 20 hours long。 Kudos to the narrator, who put in a valiant effort, She tried, and she was quite good at doing different voices, but it didn't take long for me to start feeling irritated by some of her strange choices, like having the American characters say "idee-er" for idea。。。 。。。more

Although I loved the premise of this book, and the story itself was pretty good, it was easily 200 pages too long。 So much fluff could have been taken out and it would have really been a solid 4, maybe even 5 star for me。 When you push past the excessive character development, and the extra stuff that made the police work slower and less interesting, the rest is really solid。 I really enjoyed it but I just can't get beyond 3 star for this- the length really did me in。 Thank you to Amazon Crossin Although I loved the premise of this book, and the story itself was pretty good, it was easily 200 pages too long。 So much fluff could have been taken out and it would have really been a solid 4, maybe even 5 star for me。 When you push past the excessive character development, and the extra stuff that made the police work slower and less interesting, the rest is really solid。 I really enjoyed it but I just can't get beyond 3 star for this- the length really did me in。 Thank you to Amazon Crossing for sending me an ARC for review- this does make me interested in the mentioned trilogy, as I haven't read that yet。 (Maybe I would have loved this one if I had?) 。。。more

Usually a thriller is entertaining, and fine to pass the time。 This thriller is so wonderfully written—the descriptions of the settings and characters are as compelling as the plot。While Amaia is visiting the Quantico FBI Academy with other international inspectors and detectives, she’s especially looking forward to a seminar led by FBI agent Dupree。 Imagine her shock and that of her mentor when Dupree seems to be singling her out during his presentation。 He’s already recognized her as a "needle Usually a thriller is entertaining, and fine to pass the time。 This thriller is so wonderfully written—the descriptions of the settings and characters are as compelling as the plot。While Amaia is visiting the Quantico FBI Academy with other international inspectors and detectives, she’s especially looking forward to a seminar led by FBI agent Dupree。 Imagine her shock and that of her mentor when Dupree seems to be singling her out during his presentation。 He’s already recognized her as a "needle in a haystack" like him—a detective with nearly supernatural instincts。Amaia goes overnight from a trainee to an integral part of the hunt for a serial killer。 With the beautiful and tragic backdrop of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, what she thinks is just the hunt for the serial killer is also assisting Dupree with chasing monsters from his own past。Usually thrillers are built heavily on the unexpected twists in their plot。 This book was also poetic and inspiring in its descriptions of the historic city of New Orleans, the magic that lives there, and the tragedy brought so suddenly by Hurricane Katrina。 I’d rate this book a high 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to those who like contemporary stories, thrillers, and drama with some old-school voodoo history。 。。。more

Then North Face of The Heart may just be the perfect book for you! The "composer" is unlike anyone I've read about before。 He only murders families (where the number, ages and sexes match up with his own) and strikes AFTER they survive natural disasters like a tornado, hurricane, etc。 The first chapter of this book was haunting and the madness didn't relent until the very end!-We've all heard about (or perhaps lived through) the atrocities of Hurricane Katrina, but this book was so incredibly descriptive and honest that it felt like you were experiencing the destruction unfold in real-time。 And imagine hunting a serial killer while trying to stay alive yourselves - absolutely wild!!-I learned so much about criminology and victimology in this book。 I found those chapters and bits of information to be fascinating。 And while building the serial killer profile was also discussed, nothing ever felt boring to textbook which was really appreciated。 I love when I can be educated reading a fictional book and Redondo did a fantastic job of weaving in just enough to keep me completely invested in a 688 page book。 Yes, this one was very long and could have probably been a few hundred pages shorter, but I thoroughly enjoyed it start to finish。-I've read a few reviews that mentioned that the introduction of a separate storyline and killer halfway through the book was distracting。 At first, I couldn't figure out why she included it, but as the story unfolded, I appreciated the fact that we were hunting two killers and one of the main characters was able to seek personal revenge。 Was that inclusion 100% necessary? No。 But I liked the vivid imagery and descriptive nature a lot。 。。。more
